A vast amount of federal and California tax material is freely available on-line.
Legalbitstream offers full text of federal tax cases such decisions of the United States Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court, federal appeals courts and federal district courts; the text of the Internal Revenue Code and the Treasury Regulations; the text of Revenue Rulings (opinions of the Internal Revenue Service on various tax issues); and the text of tax treaties.
The Internal Revenue Service has a web page which includes all of its publications and federal tax forms (such as tax returns) for the current and preceding tax years. Taxpayers who prepare their own tax returns (and it is not always that difficult) should consider downloading the Internal Revenue Service's Publication 17, entitled "Your Federal Income Tax". This is a clearly-written, comprehensive guide (the 2013 version is 288 pages long) to the preparation of a federal income tax return.
